High schoolers experiment with economics

Frenzied shouts of joy and groaning protests of disbelief erupted periodically from the teenagers who gathered in the Business Education Building last week to participate in an experimental economics lab. Some leaned forward, eyes narrowed to discerning slivers, watching the shifting numbers on the laptop screens in front of them.

Ryan Cooper, a senior from Service High School, was one of the 24 students selected from six Anchorage high schools to participate in the lab that visited the University of Alaska Anchorage campus.

“Right now we’re doing a lottery where you bid whatever you want to,” said Cooper. “The strategy is either to keep your own money or put all your money in so that everybody will get more.” More...

It was a Wednesday evening in the middle of summer and something was clearly afoot at Alaska Pacific University. The parking lot at the Mosely Sports Center was teeming, a few strange orange and white markers were visible hanging from trees and lampposts, and everywhere I turned someone was looking at a map.

No, it was not a campus tour gone terribly awry. It was the Arctic Orienteering Club’s latest meet. Two friends and I decided to try our hands at navigating our way through it. More...
