Campus to gain new research facility

Something fishy is going on in the welding yard behind the Lucy Cuddy Center. Under blue plastic tarpaulins, 15 large, white, cylindrical tanks are roped off with a string. Tied to the string is a cardboard sign with the words “Warning, Biohazard Keep Away” written across it in marker.

This set up is part of an experiment being conducted by graduate student Rick Bernhardt who is working on his doctorate in biology. The tanks contain fish called sticklebacks. Bernhardt is studying the effects of a synthetic chemical called perchlorate on the fish’s metabolism. More...

Local organization brings Scottish music and dress to Highland Games

As the fog rolls off the Chugach mountains surrounding Eagle River, a drumbeat can be heard. Soon the melody of bagpipes chimes in with the beat of the drum.  Either we’ve been transported to Scotland or we have just arrived at the 22nd Annual Alaska Scottish Highland Games.

Since we are, indeed, still in Alaska, the later must be the appropriate explanation.
The Alaskan Scottish Highland Games is hosted each year by the Alaskan Scottish Club. The purpose of the event is to introduce Alaskans to the piping and drumming, dancing and athletics competitions of the Scottish Highlands. More...
