Hickel donates archives to library
The University of Alaska Anchorage’s new
consortium library received its first endowment of personal
archives on July 10 in a private ceremony. The archives, donated
by former Alaska Gov. Walter J. Hickel, include correspondence,
papers and photographs from his two terms in office. More... |

In its first year, the Raven’s Quest Summer
Instituteat the University of Alaska Anchorage has been going strong
since classes began on June 1. The program aims to train behavioral
health specialists for rural Alaska, a career that has a high turnover
rate.
A group of 22 students, ranging in age from 19 to
25, are currently enrolled. As the program nears its final weeks,
the students, peer mentors, professors and administrators are confident
in its success.
Raven’s Quest, a concept developed by program
manager Janice Troyer, was founded in response to the growing need
for a dependable workforce of behavioral health specialists. More... |

Hikers of all abilities
agree that one reward is the view from the top of the mountain.
From the top of The Dome in the Chugach Foothills, hikers
can look down on Anchorage to the west and other peaks in
the Chugach range, including Wolverine Peak, to the south.

Say what you will about The Roman Candles, there’s
no arguing that Anchorage’s greatest self-promoters have accomplished
more in the last few years than most local bands do in their lifetime.
In a veritable maelstrom of glossy photos, stickers
and promotional merchandise booths, the Roman Candles have become
one of the biggest local bands in town. And to further cement their
status, they have recently released a full-length, studio album;
an accomplishment that precious few—if any—local bands
have attained.
“Bang! Bang! Bang!” presents 12 of the
Candles’ songs in full studio glory. It allows the songs to
be heard as they were intended to be, without everything that tends
to go horribly wrong when played in a live setting. The vocals are,
for the most part, on key, and the instrumental performance is professional.
