University offers new programs

This year the onset of fall semester at the University of Alaska Anchorage brings with it the advent of four new programs approved earlier this summer by the UA Board of Regents.

The programs, offered by four different departments are “aimed at helping to meet Alaska’s workforce needs,” according to the regents’ Web site.

The approved programs are a nursing post-master’s certificate, a master of science in project management (offered through the engineering department) and certificates in industrial welding and nondestructive testing technologies both offered through the UAA’s Community and Technical College. Movies that make your brain better

When it comes to film, North Americans are, in general, easily entertained. And that’s how we like it. We don’t want to have to think when we watch a movie, we don’t want to be educated or challenged. Save that for the classroom. We simply want to sit down with our big bowl of popcorn and be, by the pure definition of the word, entertained.

We want movies with logical plots and easy solutions. We want humor and style. We certainly want justice. And above all we want a happy ending. And if that’s what you are looking for you’ll find row upon row at your local Blockbuster.

But if you are one of the few who look for something more than a warm, fuzzy feeling when you watch a movie, dig a little deeper.

For this review, I passed up the New Releases and Staff Picks sections to find something with a little more substance. More...
