Bullock honored for scoring record

The University of Alaska Anchorage honored senior Peter Bullock prior to the Northwest Nazarene win Jan. 22 with a ceremony on the court for becoming the school’s career scoring leader the weekend before. Chancellor Lee Gorsuch presented the preseason All-American with a plaque after lauding Bullock for his efforts on the court and in the classroom. Bullock scored 27 points on the road at Western Oregon, becoming UAA’s top career scorer with 1,678 points despite playing with back spasms. Bullock now bumps former Seawolf Hansi Gnad (1,666 from 1983-1987) from the top spot.

UAA men crack top 5 in region

Coming off two road losses, the UAA men’s basketball team members weren’t feeling too good about themselves. But when the first Division II regional polls were released Jan. 21, the Seawolves found themselves ranked fifth in the West Region. Due to the tough road trip, the top-five ranking came as a pleasant surprise to open the second half of the season. UAA’s 12-4 start, including 10-1 versus nonconference foes, placed it directly behind Great Northwest Athletic Conference rival Humboldt State in the poll. The regional poll is important because the top eight teams at the end of the regular season will likely receive berths in the Division II Tournament.

Sophomore nabs Skier of the Week

UAA sophomore Mandy Kaempf had the most successful week of her college skiing career. For her two-win performance at the Nevada Invitational Jan. 15-16, she was named the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association women’s Nordic Skier of the Week. Kaempf, a 26-year-old from Germany, swept the women’s 5Kilometer-freestyle and 15Kilometer-classical races at the Nevada Invitational last weekend, earning her first career victories. Kaempf led UAA’s women to a first-place finish in the 5K-freestyle event and a third-place effort in the 15K-classical. The Seawolves placed fifth of 10 overall in the team standings in the first full squad race of the season. The sophomore finished the classic 48 seconds better than her nearest competition with a winning time of 46 minutes, 12 seconds. For Kaempf, an All-American last season after finishing second in the 5K skate race at the national championships, the wins give her nine career top-ten finishes.

Ski team shows its stuff

The UAA ski team got good news heading into its weekend road trip to the University of Utah Invitational on Jan. 23. Following a fifth-place team finish at the University of Nevada Invitational Jan. 15-16, the Seawolves got some well-deserved recognition when they were voted to a No. 8 ranking in the NCAA Ski Racing Coaches Poll. UAA even nabbed a solo first-place vote, meaning some lonely soul thought the Seawolves are the No.1 full sqaud. Denver, the defending NCAA champion, sits atop the poll’s first-place votes and 108 points, followed by Colorado and Utah, which are tied for second with 93 points. NCAA Ski Racing Coaches Poll
