Tuesdays –

Come jam the healthy way at Organic Oasis from 7:30-10:30 p.m.

Sing your heart out at the open blues jam at the Alley starting at 9:30 p.m.

Wednesdays –

Bring your fiddle to Irish Wednesdays at Snow City Cafe from 7-11 p.m.

Grab your ID and truck it out to the Great Bear Brewing Company, 238 North Boundary Ave. in Wasilla at 7 p.m.

Show off your jazz skills at the Alley at 9:30 p.m.

Saturdays – Grab a good book or play some tunes at Borders’ open mic at 8 p.m. the last Saturday of every month.

Sundays – The first and third Sundays of the month show off at Snow City Cafe from 7-10 p.m. All acoustic acts are welcome. Cover charge is $2.

Friends of AKD meeting

Friends of Alpha Kappa Delta, sponsored by the sociology department, meet every Monday at 1:30 p.m. in the College of Arts and Sciences, Room 366. Every Wednesday they have a bake and book sale in the CAS lobby from 11 a.m.–4:30 p.m. If you are interested in the social issues of the world and would like to be a part of Friends of AKD, contact Rick Wright at krizkringell@yahoo.com.

Hustle and Nightclub Two-Step with Barbara Morgan, Fridays from 5:15-6:15 p.m. Swing Dance workshop with Erick Hayden, Fridays from 6:30-7:30 p.m. $7 for UAA students/faculty/staff; $10 regular admission.

Sounds of the Underground

An alternative to music at Koot’s, AK This Month’s “Sounds of the Underground” features different DJs on Thursday evenings at 10 p.m. at the Alley. For times and information, call 646-2222.

Bake and Book Sale

Friends of AKD offers a tasty alternative to vending machines treats as well as cheap textbooks pertaining to sociological issues that make great research materials. Held in the College of Arts and Sciences Building lobby from 11:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.

Noon music

Come see who is performing this week in the Campus Center from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

Fiddler in the barn

Come listen to a little bit of everything. Katie Manor and the Moccasin Stompers play at Wayne’s Texas BBQ, C Street and 36th Avenue from 6-8 p.m.

Politics Forum

The UAA Campus Bookstore hosts a forum called “Politics, Conflicts and Cultural Production.” The guest speaker is Steven Dinero from Philadelphia University who will present “The Politics of Education Provision in Rural Native Alaska: The Case of Yukon Village.” Dinero has recently received a large NSF grant to study economic development in rural Alaska. Forum is from 7-9 p.m. and is free to the public.

Irish Wednesday

Bring your fiddle to Irish Wednesdays at Snow City Cafe from 7-11 p.m.

Valley Open Mic

If you’re hard-pressed for an escape from the midweek doldrums in Anchorage, grab your ID and truck it out to the Great Bear Brewing Company, 238 North Boundary Ave. in Wasilla for its open mic night at 7 p.m.

Spring break safety

The Advising and Counseling Center offers tips on the affects of alcohol and how to be safe during spring break. Presentation is free but you must register at least a day in advance. To register call 786-4500 or register in person in the Business Education Building, Room 115. Presentation is in BEB, Room 112 from 11:45 a.m.–12:45 p.m.

Gallery opening

Opening reception in the Campus Center Gallery from 5-7 p.m. Show runs from March 18 through April 8. UAA Print Club members present a juried international printmaking show. Works are selected for creative interpretations based on the concept of the poster expressed in the theme of diversity.

Lord of the Dance

Your favorite Irish dance group is coming to Anchorage. Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance brings puffy shirts and tap shoes to the Atwood Concert Hall at 8 p.m. Tickets are $41-61 and can be purchased at CarrsTix or at www.tickets.com.

Live theater

The Perseverance Theater presents “Up: the Man in the Flying Lawn Chair,” a play about a man who ties helium balloons to his lawn chair and flew into the atmosphere. 8 p.m. in the Sydney Lawrence Theater at the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts. Anchorage Classical Ballet presents “Aurora–A Tale of Northern Lights” at 7:30 p.m. at UAA’s Wendy Williamson Auditorium. The show is based off of Mindy Dwyer’s children’s book about Alaska. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased at www.ticketleap.com, by calling 569-3267, or at the door.

Come see Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio in “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” at the Bear Tooth Theatre and Pub. As part of the “Reel Eyes” Film Festival, the movie will be showing at 5:30 and 8 p.m. A sign interpreter is available at the 5:30 showing.
