State senate debate booked on campus

Concert Board

Senator Lindsey Eberhardt reported that the board is “putting out many offers, but none have come back yet.”

Concert Board sought to bring Late Night talk-show host Conan O’Brien and comedian Dave Chappelle to the university, but both declined, said Eberhardt.

“It’s really hard to get people to come to Alaska, but we’re doing the best we possibly can,” she said.

Academic Affairs

Academic Affairs completed color posters advertising Union of Students at University of Alaska Anchorage services.

Legislative Affairs

Senator Cassie Iutzi-Mitchell arranged to have the largest and final state senate debate take place in the Wendy Williamson Auditorium. The debate will be televised on KTUU, and there will be a 30-minute time slot reserved specifically for students to ask candidates questions pertaining to the university.

“This is a huge thing (Iutzi-Mitchell) has put together,” USUAA president Jake Gondek said. “It’s the final debate before the…election.”

March 15, Legislative Affairs will select student senators to travel to Juneau in April.

Rules Committee

The Rules Committee and Board of Cultural Awareness chairperson Reem Sheikh modified the BCA’s bylaws to fall in line with the USUAA constitution.

There are now two vacancies on the Rules Committee because two senators have reached the maximum allowed absences.

New Referendums

BCA Constitutional Amendment

The Board of Cultural Awareness will have seven voting members under the amendment, and an unrestricted number of members or volunteers. In the past, the BCA has been allowed seven members total.

Contingency Money to Support BCA Diversity Fair

The assembly voted to award the BCA $1,200 to support the Cultural Diversity Fair planned for April 3.

Student Government Fee Restructured

USUAA voted to pass a referendum that would change the student government fee from a flat $7 per semester to $1 per credit per semester, with a $12 cap.

The fee change would mean a lesser charge for students enrolled in six or less credits, the same charge for students enrolled in seven credits, and an increase for students enrolled in eight or more credits.

Student Leadership Conference Responsibility

The assembly voted unanimously that responsibility for coordinating the Student Leadership Conference shall be delegated to the chairperson of the Academic Affairs Committee.

New Student Recreation Center

A referendum was passed to allow students to vote on whether to pursue building a student recreation center.

The recreation center would be independent of the athletics department, giving students priority for equipment use over athletes and the community. A $75-per-semester fee would be initiated to support construction of the new facility.

Proposed equipment include a new swimming pool, a climbing wall and a multipurpose area. The referendum will be brought before students in the April USUAA elections.
