OUR PERSPECTIVE :::

Embrace change by getting involved in campus

( PUBLISHED 31 AUG. 2004)

Change is good.

It takes place on every college campus from year to year. New students replace departed graduates. Buildings are added and existing ones remodeled. Departments move to different buildings.

Change is vital at UAA, which is looking to grow and become a more traditional college each year. Changes are taking place on campus and they are for the better. Keep this in mind if you are inconvenienced at some point.

New signs on campus will help students unfamiliar with campus get around better, especially during the dark days of winter when they will be lit internally. The new signs will bring a close to any confusion over new building names. Returning students need to face the facts and start calling the Campus Center the Student Union to help the process along.

The revamped library was completed in the spring and is ready for its first full school year of student use. If you haven’t used the library yet, get down there and study some time. It’s the best place on campus to get your work done.

The library’s next-door neighbor, the Administration and Humanities Building, now houses the history department with the English department to follow next year. The moves will create space and make the faculty more accessible.

The summer saw the passing of the torch from outgoing Chancellor E. Lee Gorsuch to UAA’s new leader Elaine Maimon. Maimon has only been in Anchorage for a whirlwind two and half weeks but she has already made herself accessible to students and faculty despite a hectic schedule.

At the Northern Light, we have embraced change as well. Those familiar with us over the past year will notice our new look. We felt it was time to spruce things up and produce a more modern newspaper for college students that is both clean and consistent.

Inside we have expanded our opinion section by hiring an opinion editor. The expansion took place to create a bigger forum for the voice of our readers. Now we need to hear from you. Let us know what you see on campus that gets under your skin or brings a smile to your face.

Readers can also expect a new Northern Light Web site in the coming weeks. The site will have improved navigation, better search capability and improved archives. Plus there will be Web-exclusive stories, as we will post breaking campus news and Seawolf sports results on the site.

So now that you see some of the changes that have taken place to make our college better, the Northern Light has a simple request for you. Get involved on campus.

We don’t care where you get involved, just get up from your TV or computer and find your place on campus. The opportunities are endless.

Join a club. The Outdoor Club is UAA’s largest and if you like to hike or ice climb they will welcome you with open arms. If the outdoors isn’t your thing, there are over 100 clubs on campus to choose from.

Embrace campus events. They are your fees at work. Those who went to the Campus Kick-Off events were treated to hilarious comedians and some fine local music. Keep an eye on the Northern Light calendar each week and we’ll let you know what you can’t afford to miss.

Run for a student government position. USUAA holds more power than we all think. Get in and let your voice be heard. If you think we need a pub on campus, run for a Senate seat and make it your mission.

Do you like music? Then head over to KRUA, our campus radio station, and get a DJ spot to showcase your musical tastes. At the very least, program 88.1 FM on your car radio.

Finally, if you need a job, look on campus. There are almost always openings and you can’t beat the location. Plus, a campus job helps you make connections on campus with people you normally would walk right past.

Did I mention we’re always looking for reporters?
