New
signs in place
Improvements cause confusion
(PUBLISHED 31 AUG 2004) The
first phase of a major signage facelift at the University
of Alaska Anchorage is nearly complete but not without causing
some confusion on campus. In Phase One of the Wayfinding
Project, a plan to improve signage at UAA, 43 new signs
were installed around campus this summer. The signs sport
new colors, new building names and feature illuminated lettering
to increase visibility at night.

200 University of Alaska Anchorage staff, faculty and
students gathered at the Wendy Williamson Auditorium Aug.
26 to discuss the state of the university, the future
of UAA and to recognize faculty who have earned promotion,
tenure and emeritus.
Plagiarism
prevention site Turnitin.com on its way to UAA
(PUBLISHED 31 AUG 2004) Citing
a rise in academic dishonesty cases, the University of
Alaska Anchorage is seeking to establish an account with
Turnitin.com. Advertised as “plagiarism prevention,”
the site searches for instances of possible plagiarism
by using a database comprised of previously submitted
papers, published sources and works available from online
essay distributors called ‘paper mills.’
Aramark
gets new chief
(PUBLISHED 31 AUG 2004) Changes
are taking place at campus eateries after the hiring of
a Rick Leibowitz. Leibowitz replaced Michael Cervantes
in June as the Aramark food service director for University
Dining Services. Leibowitz is an employee of Aramark,
whose contract with the university will be up for renewal
in June 2006. Leibowitz expressed confidence that
the changes implemented since he took over will improve
the quality of food and customer service and will be cost-effective
for students.
